A Research Project and Book by Inge S. Horton
Julia Morgan is known as an eminent woman architect, but she was not alone. Many more women practiced architecture in the late 19th and early 20th century. My research focuses on the lives, careers, and work of these mostly unknown pioneering women who started their careers in Northern California before 1951. The results were documented in a chronicle of triumphs and challenges which these path-breaking women faced in their pursuit of entering and claiming space in the male-dominated field of architecture. The richly illustrated book Early Women Architects of the San Francisco Bay Area - The Lives and Work of Fifty Professionals, 1890-1951 was published as a reference book by McFarland & Company in August 2010.
