A global exploration of the democratic design processes in urban disasters and the architect's adaptive role in such complex modern environments. Where will you be when "the big one" strikes? Alexandra will base her talk on her doctoral dissertation, "Framing Disaster Research as 'Wicked' Design Problems," where she shares some of the key lessons from running the New Zealand chapter of Architecture for Humanity, and discuss the changing role of the architecture and design professionals in the 21st century in the context of recent urban disasters. Alexandra is a Korean New Zealander who is currently in the US as a Research Scholar at the Institute of Urban and Regional Development at UC Berkeley, and has spent the last decade applying her architectural knowledge to teach, practice, and advocate for democratic design. Currently she is working on converting her PhD to a book that would give voice to public interest designers and expand the role of architecture in the 21st century. The lecture will be followed by a question and answer session. There is no charge for the event but registration is requested. This event is for Design Professionals and members of the public with interest in the topics described. |
