The main program will be a workshop which will use techniques from Theatre of the Oppressed to explore the topic: Equity Resilience Power. Theatre of the Oppressed, developed by Brazilian Augusto Boal, is based on the work of Brazilian educator and theorist Paulo Freire. As a teaching technique, Theatre of the Oppressed trains the audience to take action and explore critical thinking, analyzing current social issues. Our presenter, Elizabeth Gore, worked for a decade with Theater of the Oppressed groups in the U.S. and abroad. She trained directly with Theater of the Oppressed founder, Augusto Boal. Ms. Gore has a B.S. in Radio, Television and Film from Northwestern University (2003), an M.A. in Anthropology of Education from Stanford University (2007), and a M.A. in Teaching from Brown University (2008). After teaching drama at a high school in Richmond, CA, Ms. Gore will join the Industrial Areas Foundation as a community organizer.
Movement: On Saturday, we will join Raffaella Falchi, ODC Dance Commons instructor who will teach us afro-Brazilian and samba dance styles. Ms. Falchi began studying Brazilian dance in 1996. She has taught Brazilian inspired movement and dance in San Francisco for ten years. On Sunday, Carol Kress, Feldenkrais Resources Training Institute, will lead an Awareness Through Movement class. Carol Kress has been a Feldenkrais Practitioner for 24 years, and is a trainer in Berkeley, CA and San Rafael, CA.
Music: On Saturday night, Gringa, which is based here in San Francisco, CA, will play songs from Brazil and the Americas. Gringa is about to cut an album for release.
